I agree – a healthy debate is absolutely fine. I think that’s what most of us have in the DOC. However, when there is a negative comment posted, I don’t think it is wise to respond directly, or even to continue the discussion. It is already going down a dark path and nothing good will come of it. Either disengage or take the conversation elsewhere with people who are going to be calm, cool and collected. You can’t change what other people do, but you can change what you do and that’s what I’ve learned.

I feel there is absolutely nothing wrong with a healthy debate. People are definitely entitled to their own opinions about anything. Especially when it comes to living with something like diabetes. If everyone’s diabetes varies, it’s no surprise that feelings about it are going to vary as well. And there is nothing wrong with people voicing those feelings. On the other hand, I tend to agree with you about disengaging. I usually do not partake in any kind of heated discussion. I haven’t even read this forum on CWD! Even though I understand where people are coming from, I too wish that there wasn’t so much negativity around the subject. Especially since improvements in the treatment of diabetes AND a cure would obviously benefit both children and adults with it.

I have to agree with the sentiment that I’m happy I missed it too. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss!!!!!

At any rate, thanks for the apology. Not because you owe me one or anything, but because it’s nice to see someone stand up and put their pride down if they feel it’s the right thing to do!

I have no idea what went on last night, because I disengaged from Twitter a while ago. But what I know for sure is that the internet is the world’s biggest school playground. Bullying and bitchiness are rife, as are cliques and groups of “the cool kids”. For some reason people can’t agree to disagree when they’re behind a computer screen. It makes me pretty sad, when I see so many people talking about the value of community and support online, that in my experience these days, it’s so often not like that. Time to disengage indeed. I suffered enough of that when I was actually at school!

agreed with the respect thing. I had something similar on a diabetes forum recently where things got out of hand despite it not meaning or needing to. It can hurt ones reputation hugely which has happened to myself on said forum, and now I am unable to post there It’s a shame because sometimes even with the best of intentions, things can get out of hand very quickly

I share in your regret and apology, Allison. Regardless of one’s intentions and perspective and overall merits on any discussion topic, being too quick on the keyboard hurts not only that person’s reputation but the larger community. Thank you for posting this first and being an adult enough to do it. Here’s to moving forward, with civility and respect to all.
