{Ten Things on Tuesday} Thirty-One.
This Ten Things on Tuesday couldn’t come at a better time! I’ve just come back to San Diego, where I spent my fifth weekend on the road! In case you weren’t keeping track, I’ve been to Palo Alto, Maine, Vermont, Kansas City, and San Diego. And two weeks before that travel circus started, we were in Quebec.
Whew.
Thanks to Chelsea for hosting and to Lindsay at The Rowland Family for coming up with the questions!
1. You’re packing for a week long vacation, do you pack ahead of time or wait until the last possible minute to pack?
This is really bad, but I almost always pack last-minute. Usually the night before, with my toiletries packed in the morning. And I almost always forget something. It’s horrible but I never learn.
2. Are you a light or heavy packer?
It depends on the trip. For business trips, I tend to pack light because it’s easier for me to plan my outfits. For personal trips, I sometimes like to have options depending on the whether, if I spill something, or if I just don’t “feel” like wearing something. So then things tend to get a little heavier.
3. What are your favorite road trip snacks?
We don’t usually bring food on our road trips, but we often stop at McDonald’s. We’re horrible people, we know.
4. Do you take any reading material along?
I usually bring a book and a magazine, but lately I’ve found watching TV on airplanes makes the time travel a lot faster (and it’s about as expensive as buying a couple magazines at Hudson News). Otherwise, I rarely read while I’m actually traveling. I’m either doing something or I’m too tired!
5. Do you prefer to drive or fly to your vacation destination?
I think I do about an equal amount of both. I usually fly if it’s going to take longer than 6 hours to drive there.
6. What is your favorite time of the year to take your vacation?
Anytime that I can get off work! I don’t think I take vacation at a general time of year, since most of my trips are small weekend adventures. But usually summer and early are fall are my most hectic travel times.
7. Where is your favorite place to vacation?
I love Europe! I also love to go home to Oregon now.
8. You are vacationing in the mountains, what is your favorite thing to do while there?
Hiking and taking lots of pictures of nature.
9. You are at the beach for your vacation, do you like to take it easy on the beach or play all day in the water?
I never go on vacation to the beach! I’d probably hang out in a coastal town, shopping and eating ice cream and saltwater taffy.
10. While your on vacation do you prefer to eat out every night or cook some of your own meals?
Usually I’m staying at a hotel on vacation, so we almost always go out. But on our honeymoon, we rented a house and we were able to cook our own food and that was really fun too. It was almost more relaxing to stay home and chill rather than having to drive somewhere and deal with obnoxious people. Eating at restaurants is not always relaxing.

You haven’t seen “heavy packing” until you’ve seen an SF/F, anime, costumer, or cosplay fan pack for a convention. (Or a SCAdian for that matter.) For each day there is a “hall costume” and an evening costume, sometimes a set of mundane (“normal”) clothes (if going off-campus for dinner), and sometimes one or more competition, LARP, or set-piece costumes as well. These costumes include clothing (from the undergarments out), hosiery, jewelry, footwear, and props; often makeup, wigs, and/or appliances (such as Spock ears or a Klingon forehead) as well.
